In our opinion, this is still the best recording of
the Sowerby Symphony. The sound of the organ in the glorious acoustic space
of the building and a stunning performance purely in the Sowerby style make
this the recording
to have. This would be an excellent gift for this reason alone but
also because it contains Sowerby’s rarely-heard Wedding Processional. Michael's
Music Service is the exclusive distributor of this recording. $15.00.
This Is A New Recording
William Whitehead (d. 2000) made this recording in 1989 in Washington “National” Cathedral
on the great IV/185 organ by Ernest Skinner and Aeolian-Skinner
(1938/1958), which was enlarged by Joseph Whiteford
in 1963 and 1974. Whitehead studied with Mildred Andrews and Alexander
McCurdy and received degrees from the University of Oklahoma,
Curtis Institute of Music, and Columbia University. He served
as organist and director of music at many churches including Fifth
Avenue Presbyterian Church, New York City, and Kirk in the Hills,
Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He played numerous recitals and served on the faculties
of the Guilmant School, Mannes College of Music, and Westminster Choir College.
Booklet includes complete specification of the organ. This music was written
by an American and played on an American organ.
