Houlihan’s LA Vierne Reviewed

Louis Vierne’s Organ Symphonies Are A Revelation

Mark Swed of the LA Times wrote about Houlihan’s two concerts of Vierne symphonies in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. Things went well, evidently, though the large church was not even partially well filled: “The crowds weren’t large (no tickets were necessary; a $10 donation was suggested), and they seemed to consist of organ nuts and the curious.” It sounds as though Mark Swed may have become a fan of both Houlihan and Vierne: “Houlihan’s most remarkable feat may have been to find glimpses of luminosity in the desolate Fifth that revealed great insights into the human condition.”
