Gospel’s Greatest Living Organist on TV

Gospel Music’s Greatest Living Organist

Moses Tyson Jr will appear on Trinity Broadcasting Network’s Praise The Lord program tomorrow, Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 10 pm. Many cable providers carry TBN, but not all. This will be the largest audience exposure this organist, a huge favorite in Gospel Music, has had. His style is based in pure American Jazz, with a heavy infusion of the Blues.

For an example of his nothing-held-back recitative playing, try this video of Pray for Me. It’s a live performance where he makes the Hammond B3 “talk.” Note the original tone cabinet with scratches. Or, just go to youtube.com and enter “Moses Tyson Jr” in the search engine to see lots and lots more. If you are not familiar with this kind of organ music, I encourage you to listen to it and try to find the elements of jazz improvisation along with his personal styling of speech imitation. This technique has been used for over a century with other instruments such as trumpet and saxophone.
