The 6 overtures in this collection comprise the most requested transcriptions
for organ. Goss-Custard, like Herbert Brewer, did not attempt to capture
absolutely everything going on in the orchestra. (Lemare can take care
of that!) The result is a musically rewarding, integral organ arrangement
that recreates the excitement of the original orchestral pieces.
- Egmont Overture, by Ludwig van Beethoven
- Overture to Figaro, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
- Overture to Zampa, by J Ferdinand Hérold
- Poet and Peasant Overture, by Franz von Suppé
(compare with Lemare’s
transcription)
- Overture to Carmen, by Georges Bizet
- Overture to Der Freischütz, by Carl Maria von
Weber

Reginald Goss-Custard (1877-1956) did not have formal musical study
but developed his skill “on the job” at several London churches,
among them St Margaret’s, Westminster, where he succeeded Edwin H Lemare.
He is still remembered for his many popular recitals
at the Alexandra Palace and his many organ pieces and transcriptions. Moderate
to Moderately Difficult.
