Johannes (John) Zundel (1815-1882) was a respected and beloved organist
in New York City. Before moving to the United States in 1847, he studied organ
building with Walcker and organ playing with Rinck. He is best known for the
hymntune, “Beecher,” which he named for his long time friend and
supporter, Henry Ward Beecher. Due to his strong German accent, he used to
say, “I cannot pray with my lips, but I pray with my fingers.” You
may read about Zundel and the Plymouth Church organ in this
article
(PDF) from 1899. Easy.
