Joseph Jacques Callaerts (1830–1901) was born in Antwerp, Belgium, and was a student of Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels, where he won first prize in organ in 1856. He began serving as organist of the Jesuit College in Antwerp in 1850, he was appointed organist of the Cathedral in Antwerp in 1855, where he had sung as a chorister. He taught organ and harmony at the Antwerpse Muziekschool (renamed Royal Flemish Conservatory) from 1867 until 1901. In addition to his approximately 60 organ works, Callaerts composed a symphony, two organ/orchestra works, chamber music, an opera, vocal, choral and piano music. Moderate.
