Rossetter Gleason Cole (1966-1952) was born on February 5, 1866 in Clyde, Michigan. He received a Bachelor of
Philosophy degree from the University of Michigan in 1888; he also received an honorary Master of Arts degree from them in 1913.
During the period of 1890 to 1892, Cole went to Berlin, Germany, where he studied composition with Max Bruch and organ with Wilhelm
Middelschulte. He taught at Ripon College, Grinnell College, and the University of Wisconsin; he served as head of theory and dean
of the Cosmopolitan School of Music in Chicago, Illinois, and as organist for First Church of Christ Scientist in Evanston. For 31 years
from 1908, he was head of the music department for the Columbia University Summer Session, where he taught George Gershwin during 1921.
His over 90 compositions include music for chorus, orchestra, voice, piano and organ. Cole died on May 18, 1952 in Lake Bluff, Illinois.
The two pieces of Opus 38 are his penultimate organ works. The style and registration of “Summer Fancies” reflects the
III/23 Skinner organ, Opus 208 (1913), that Cole played at his church in Evanston. The rather capricious nature of the music is
apparent amidst the lyricism of this piece. Moderately easy.
