Henry Stephen Cutler (1824-1902) was known for serving in New York City churches and especially for bringing
the idea of using men and boys and choir vestments to this country. He had seen the effects of The Oxford Movement in England
while visiting there and worked to share this with American churches. Always popular, this tune is found in
every hymnal. I offer you
a PDF for your soloist so that you can print pages for the “Solo Instrument” as Cutler identifies it.
The range is A3 to G5 (or relative octave); you might use a trumpet or cornet, a French Horn, or perhaps an oboe, or even a set of handbells!
Please download and print this music and duplicate freely, and then email me of your performance of this great American music from 1878.
You might play Cutler’s variations in a service where you sing “A Mighty Fortress.” Moderate.
