Edward Shippen Barnes (1887–1958) was a
graduate of Yale University and a student of Horatio Parker, Louis Vierne and Vincent d’Indy. He was organist of Rutgers Presbyterian
Church in New York from 1913 until 1924, St Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Philadelphia from 1924 until 1938. In addition to his organ
compositions, method, and arrangements, he is most remembered for his 1937 harmonization of the carol “Angels We Have Heard on
High” used in most hymnals.
Charles Rudolf Friml (1879–1972), born in Prague, Bohemia, studied piano and composition
with Antonín Dvorák at the Prague Conservatory. After touring in the United States in 1901, 1902, and 1904 as piano accompanist for
the violinist, Jan Kubelík, Friml moved to the United States in 1906. He was known for the operettas that he composed during the 1920s,
such as “Rose-Marie” and “The Vagabond King.” Easy.
