Harvey B Gaul (1881-1945), student of Buck, Guilmant and Widor, is best
known for his prolific output of compositions and transcriptions. He was also
known for his scholarly writing, and you can
read
an example from 1918.
From the Southland is a distallation
for Gaul’s love of folk music and especially spirituals. Your audience
may not recognize the spirituals and plantation songs he uses here, but they
will feel the characteristic warmth and enjoy the hummable melodies. Fans of
Richard Keys Biggs will notice that Gaul dedicated this piece to him. Moderately
easy.
