Harvey Bartlett Gaul (1881-1945), student of Buck, Guilmant and Widor, is best known for his prolific output of
compositions and transcriptions. He was also known for his scholarly writing, and you can
read an example from 1918.
Gaul’s
Moravian Morning Star is an arrangement of this beautiful melody “as sung and played in the
Lehigh Valley on Christmas Eve by the Moravian Children.” The tune,
Hagen, was written in 1836 by Francis Florentine
Hagen, a Moravian minister and teacher at the Salem Boys School in North Carolina. Although associated with Christmas and Epiphany,
this piece is appropriate at any time. Moderately easy.
