This Is Newly Printed Music
Harvey Bartlett Gaul (1881-1945), student of Buck, Guilmant and Widor, is best known for his prolific output of
compositions and transcriptions. He was also known for his scholarly writing, and you can
read an example from 1918. The tune he used in this piece is that
of the song “Flow Gently, Sweet Afton” which was composed in 1837 by Jonathan Edwards Spilman. The anonymous
American carol “Away in a Manger” has a long association with this tune. Moderate.
