Hugo
Goodwin (1883-1936) was born in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin, studied organ with Wilhelm Middelschulte and Charles-Marie Widor,
and was a prolific recitalist. He was known for his tenure as the municipal
organist for St Paul, Minnesota, playing their IV/83 EM Skinner organ,
Opus 308 (1920). To understand something of the composer of this piece,
here is a bit from “The New Music Review,” May 1917: “We
are indebted to Mr. Hugo Goodwin, A.A.G.O., organist of the New England
Congregational Church of Chicago, for a list of one thousand pieces which
he has played without repetition. The list was completed on October 26,
1916, and it is fair to assume that Mr. Goodwin is now well on his way
towards the two thousandth. There is one surprising omission in the published
list: we miss a transcription of Mascagni’s Intermezzo.” This
highly programmatic music from a little-known master organist is at once
far away and immediate, atmospheric and dramatic.
Read the legend
that is the program for the piece. Moderately easy.
