Harvey B Gaul (1881-1945), student of Buck, Guilmant and Widor, is best
known for his prolific output of compositions and transcriptions. He was also
known for his scholarly writing, and I include a sample article he wrote
in 1916 on Easter organ music. (
Read
an example from 1918.) “Peer Gynt” was
written by the great Norwegian playwright, Henrik Ibsen, and it was Ibsen who
asked Grieg to write 32 pieces of incidental music for the play. He completed
the set in 1876 and selected four of them in 1888 as the
First Peer
Gynt Suite,
Opus 46. The titles are: “Morning Mood,” “The Death of Åse,” “Anitra’s
Dance,” and “In the Hall of the Mountain King.” Much of
this will be recognizable to your audience and
