This Is Newly Printed Music
Frederick Flaxington Harker (1876-1936) was born in Scotland and was trained there, at one point studying with
T Tertius Noble at York Minster. In 1901, George Washington Vanderbilt, grandson of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, arranged to
have Harker emigrate to the United States to serve as his organist. As it is today, there were protests for hiring a foreigner
for a job which could easily have been done by an American; times don’t change much! There is much more interesting history
to read in John Apple’s capsule biography. Moderate.
