This Is Newly Printed Music
Walter Russell Johnston (1841-1900), was for more than 40 years the
organist at St Paul’s Methodist Episcopal Church in New York City. Through
self study and with nearly no conventional music training, he became a
prolific recitalist and composer. He was a prodigy and played in Boston’s
Tremont Temple at age 12 but began at St Mary’s Episcopal in Brooklyn
at age 8. These pieces are melodic, evocative, and within the technique of
nearly all organists. Opus 32 started as six miniatures but ultimately grew
to nine. In Number 1, “Largo,” there
are two pedal notes, a B and Bb below bottom C, which may have been intended
for an older G-compass organ at another church in the area; most of us will
simply play the notes an octave higher. Easy to Moderately easy.
