Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877-1933) was born Siegfried Theodore Karg and changed his name to honor his mother. He studied
and then taught at Leipzig Conservatory. It was Max Reger who suggested that he compose for the organ, and he wrote dozens of pieces
for organ and harmonium. Shortly after the sinking of RMS Titanic in April of 1912, Karg-Elert wrote several compositions for
various instruments and voices using the Lowell Mason tune, and this is the piece for organ solo. Moderate. (For a different approach
using a different tune, see
Joseph
Bonnet’s In Memoriam)
