Miles I’Anson Martin* (1888-1949)
was born in Newark, New Jersey and began playing the organ for Lenten services and Sunday School at age 14. After some piano lessons,
he studied organ with William E Ashmall, Clement R Gale, and Hugh McAmis. After serving as organist at St John’s Church in Newark,
he became organist-choirmaster of St Edward the Martyr in New York in 1910. He studied composition with T Tertius Noble and during
the summer of 1923 at Fontainebleau with Charles-Marie Widor and Marcel Dupré. He was a Fellow of the American Guild of Organists and
served as its General Secretary, as well as vice-president of the Plainsong Society. In 1926, he was appointed organist-choirmaster at
St John’s Episcopal Church in Waterbury, Connecticut where he served for 23 years until his death. In addition to organ works,
Martin composed choral, vocal, violin, and piano music. Moderately easy.
