James Pearce (1841-1918) was born in England and received a Bachelor of Music from the University of Oxford in 1861.
During that year, he travelled to Canada and became the organist of the Cathedral-Basilica of Notre-Dame de Québec. At the time of this
publication, Pearce was organist-choirmaster at St Mark’s Episcopal Church in Philadelphia (1866–1872). There, he began a choir
of men and boys (Easter, April 21, 1867) and dedicated (October 23, 1867) and played their III/55 Hall & Labagh organ. I personally
chose to restore this album because of the beautiful pieces that Pearce chose and the easily playable transcriptions that he produced.
The effect is a fully-presented transcription that is accessible by nearly every organist, perfect for preludes, offertoires,
and postludes. These were among Pearce’s favorites, too, because he published this album himself. Easy to Moderate.
