Joseph Maurice Ravel (1875–1937) was born in the French Basque town of Ciboure. He began study at the Paris
Conservatoire at age 14 under Gabriel Fauré. In 1899, he composed “Pavane pour une infante défunte” (Pavane for a
Dead Child) for piano for a commission from the Princesse de Polignac to whom he dedicated it. He orchestrated the piece in 1910.
He described the piece as “an evocation of a pavane that a little princess might, in former times, have danced at the Spanish
court.”
Charles Cronham (1896–1969)
was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, and was a life-long advocate for the organ. He served as a
municipal organist in Portland, Maine; he taught, wrote, and arranged many pieces
through his life. Most of the Hammond registrations you see were provided by Cronham. This will be an instant request number
for you. Moderately easy.
