Joseph Guy Marie Ropartz (1864-1955) in Guingamp, a town in Brittany in northwestern France. The son of a lawyer,
he wanted to become a writer, especially of poetry. Acquiring an interest in music, Ropartz became a student at the Paris
Conservatoire in 1885, where he studied with Théodore Dubois (harmony), Jules Massenet (composition), and César Franck (organ).
He was director of the Conservatoires in Nancy (1894-1919) and Strasbourg (1919-1929). In addition to 13 organ pieces,
his compositions include five symphonies, chamber music, over 100 songs, piano and choral music. He was inspired
in his compositions by Franck, by Brittany and the sea, and by his faith. Ropartz died in Lanloup (Brittany region) on St Cecilia's
Day, November 22, 1955.
Ropartz composed his Theme Varie after he had started a organ class at the Nancy Conservatoire in 1897. Unlike a set of variations,
Ropartz wrote a through-composed work by varying the modal folk-like theme as the piece evolves. Moderately easy.
