Leroy Spaulding Stoughton (1884-1953) was a strong proponent of program music and wrote organ music with titles such as
“In India,” “Persian Suite,” and “Tales from Arabian Nights.” He was known as Roy in his early life
and then variously listed on his music as R S Stoughton, and, as below, R Spaulding Stoughton.
In Fairyland,
though not his first, was and remains his best known suite; see the advertisement at right found in the July 1919 issue of
“The American Organist.” The suite contains three movements: 1.
The Enchanted Forest, 2.
Idyll,
and 3.
March of the Gnomes. An enchanted forest is an important element in the
Harry Potter series, and gnomes have never been more popular, being found on television programs, collectibles, and advertisements
— there was even a gnome
motion picture recently!
This fantastic suite will be a popular highlight with any audience. Please read the
first review of In Fairyland from 1919.
Moderately easy.
