Leroy Spaulding Stoughton (1884-1953)
was a strong proponent of program music and wrote organ music with titles such as “In India,” “Persian Suite,”
and “Tales from Arabian Nights.” He was known as Roy in his early life and then variously listed on his music as R Spaulding
Stoughton and, as below, R S Stoughton. For more on him see
my blog post on
one of his other pieces.
Tales from Arabian Nights is an atmospheric suite that reminds the listener of when the Middle
East was a far-off and romantic area and not a hotbed of terrorism. It contains four movements:
1.
The Fisherman and the Genie, 2.
Julanar of the Sea, 3.
Aladdin, and
4.
Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. If you are engaged to accompany one of the great films that tell these stories,
such as “The Thief of Bagdad” (1924) or “The Tales of a Thousand and One Nights” (1921), please consider this
suite as a source of thematic material. Moderately easy.
