Edwin Evans, Senior (1844-1923)
was born, lived, and died in London, England. He was one of two to be awarded the first-ever FRCO certificates in 1866. Over his life,
he became a master of the art of transcription. The term “light cavalry”
refers to minimally-armed and armored troops mounted on horses. Evans’s transcription is of Suppé’s entire overture.
It contains themes easily recognized today from cartoons and films and makes an attention-grabbing opening number. This dramatic
war horse is in the same league as Rossini’s
Overture to William
Tell. Difficult.
