(1838-1889), a contemporary of Dudley Buck and John
Knowles Paine, was one of the early American organ virtuosi who composed
many works for the organ. An offertoire (French for offertory) is a musical
composition designed to be played during the procession with the bread and
wine during the Mass. It became the time when an organist could play music
with the greatest contrasts in styles and dynamics during the liturgy.
Thayer may have been inspired to compose this
second set of offertoires as a result of hearing and meeting organists while
touring Europe after his study there. This music was written while he lived
and worked in Boston as a teacher at the Boston Conservatory of Music, which
was founded in 1867. The three pieces of his opus 8 are
La Contemplation (offertoire
for vox humana),
La
Dévotion (offertoire for bassoon), and
Grande Offertoire de Noël (For
another original Christmas piece, see
Weihnachtspastorale)
and also the
Three Offertoires
from 1864.) The second set was accepted as teaching material by the
Boston Conservatory, and this is proudly claimed on the cover. Where else
will you find pieces for solo vox humana or solo bassoon? These pieces are
moderately simple.
