Anton Vodorinski is a pseudonym for the
English composer,
Albert William Ketèlbey (1875-1959). In 1889, he had won (Gustav Holst came in second) the
scholarship competition for Trinity College of Music. He won the competition again in 1892 and was appointed organist of St John’s
Church, Wimbledon, London, where he remained for five years. Although he had composed some serious works, shortly before receiving his
certificate from Trinity in 1895, he composed some lighter pieces. Ketèlbey subsequently became an examiner in harmony at
Trinity. During this time, he began to compose piano music under the name of Anton Vodorinski, many with French titles; perhaps this
was to avoid conflict with publishers using the name of Ketèlbey.
Organ Recital Pieces, Book XLI (41), consists of the three pieces of Opus 23. Unlike Book 34 (published
that same year) which are arrangements of piano pieces of Vodorinski, this book consists of original organ compositions. They are
written in the melodic and dramatic orchestral style for which Ketèlbey would become known in his
In a Monastery Garden (1915) and
In a Persian Market (1920). Moderately easy.
