Richard Wagner (1813–1883) was
largely self taught in music. His music is a staple of orchestras everywhere. This extract is especially recognized and loved. He
composed his Pilgrims’ Chorus for his opera, Tannhäuser (1843-1845), where it appears in the overture and in Act 3, Scene 1.
Clarence Eddy (1851-1937) studied with Dudley Buck with additional study in Berlin,
where he played for Franz Liszt. Although he served several churches in Chicago, New York, and San Francisco, Eddy’s work as a
concert organist provided him the opportunity for his compositions to be performed as well as transcriptions. Eddy frequently played this
arrangement of Wagner on many organs, including at the dedication of the IV/127 Roosevelt in the Chicago Auditorium in 1890. Moderate.
