Samuel Brenton Whitney (1842-1914) was the organist for the Church of the Advent in Boston, Massachusetts, taught at New England Conservatory, and was a founder of the American Guild of Organists. The tune, St Gertrude, first appeared in The Church Hymnary in 1872 (see a PDF here) and is widely known today. Even if your congregation no longer sings Sullivan’s catchy tune, they will enjoy this clever treatment of it. Moderate.
