| The peasants approach the church and hear the church bells in the distance, and as they move closer (open box where chimes are), they begin to hear the organ (play with that box closed.) As they move into the church (reverse swell shoes so the chimes fade and the organ part gets louder), they hear the organ more and more. The procession starts, led by a group of bagpipers (Krummhorn, 4' octave, and Tierce, or Vox Humana and 4' Flute if Vox is loud and has Tremulant off). As the mass continues, the bells ring for the elevation of the host, and then the bagpipers lead the recession. Finally, the peasants leave the church (with appropriate use of swell boxes) and the chimes fade into the distance. |
| This is technically Yon’s easiest piece, but it’s best performed on quite a specialized organ. You need to be able to have 3 sounds ... chimes, flutes/strings, and the bagpipe reed sound, plus pedal, and you need the chimes in a swell box different from the flutes/strings. You also need those swell pedals to be next to each other so you can heel-toe them in the middle of the piece to reverse the dynamics. |
