Pietro Alessandro Yon was born in Italy in 1886, moved to the US in 1907, became a citizen in 1921, and died
in New York in 1943 at age 57. The “Italian Rhapsody” is part of Twelve Divertimenti. It is subtitled,
“Italian Patriotic Hymns and Piedmontese Dances” and contains tunes that every Italian knew then and many know today.
It begins with “Inno de Garibaldi” (Hymn of Garibaldi), a mid-19th century patriotic song that became the Italian
National Anthem until 1946. It is followed “La Violetta” and “La bella Gigugin” (The Beautiful Gigugin),
Italian folksongs from the Piedmont region where Yon’s family was from. The piece is dedicated to Attilio R Yon (born 1892),
Pietro’s brother, who served in the medical corps in the Italian army during World War I. Pietro Yon performed this piece
in his recital on the IV/78 Aeolian organ, Opus 1212 (1912), in Aeolian Hall in New York City on February 24, 1919. Medium.
