Isaac Barton (1857–1938)

On the Lake of Galilee Back

Published in 1917, this tone painting is one of only nine organ works published by Barton between 1914 and 1921. Dr Barton was a Philadelphia physician and amateur organist and composer. He was evidently a significant player, as he is recorded as giving a recital in the Hall of Music at the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo in June 1901 on an Emmons Howard organ whose sister instrument was for many years in Trinity Church, Staunton, Virginia. Typical of the period, this descriptive piece is based loosely on story of Jesus and the disciples in a boat on Lake Galilee (Matthew 13). You can almost hear the lapping of the water on the boat.
