Sir Edward Elgar was an English nationalist composer, and many of his works have achieved enduring popularity. Among his best-known compositions are orchestral works including the Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, concertos for violin and cello, two symphonies, as well as anthems for the Anglican tradition. The Vesper Voluntaries were written in 1889 when he was serving as a parish organist on a small two-manual organ. They were not published until 1957.
