Alexander
Russell (1880-1953) was an important man in the American organ world
for decades. During his career, he was the music director for both Wanamaker
stores, professor of music at Princeton University, impressario, concert
artist, and composer. His St Lawrence Sketches are his
greatest work and are at the summit of the best of American program music:
I. The Citadel at Quebec, II. The Bells of St Anne
de Beaupré,
III. Song of the Basket Weaver, IV. Up the Saguenay. These atmospheric
and dramatic musical pictures offer the listener great interest on repeated
hearings and the organist the sublety and power of a symphonic orchestra.
Moderately difficult.
