George E Whiting (1840-1923), a student of W T Best, was head of the organ department at New England
Conservatory and organist for the Boston and Cincinnati Music Halls. If you’re curious about “The Great
Organ” in the Cincinnati Music Hall, I suggest some of the pages at
www.spmhcincinnati.org. Whiting’s
Pastorale was marked “in F” probably to
differentiate it from his other Pastorales. At the bottom of the first page of music, you will find “By Permission of
O. Ditson & Co.” which indicates permission from its first appearance in the collection called
The Organist from 1868 published by Oliver Ditson. This is a fine, gentle piece for your Christmas service
or for a concert from an
AGO founder. Moderately easy.
