Founders of the American Guild of Organists

In 1896, this group came together to create the AGO, a group of 145 organists and organ lovers who desired to bind themselves together around the central interest of the organ. Others have produced excellent articles on the history of the AGO and its founding members. The purpose of this list is to present a simple list with a few facts about each and where their music may be obtained. Corrections and additions are welcomed!

There are other sources for finding music of the Founders of the AGO. There are sites which carry used music such as Ebay and Amazon. There are some second-hand stores that carry music from time to time such as used book stores, Goodwill, and Salvation Army; these are not online. In many cases, it is possible to borrow music from a local public or school library and through Interlibrary Loan. I have also found interesting music at neighborhood yard sales! There are download sites, some of which come and go and offer badly scanned and sometimes incomplete online documents, and there are substantial sites such as the Sibley Library of Eastman School that hold a strong commitment to quality and integrity. These sites will continue only as long as the money from the school or from donors keep them going. A special consideration for these download sites is that music from the Founders was printed at a time when paper sizes were much larger than those of today, and the resulting shrunken image may be difficult to read and your normal thin copy paper may curl and fall off the rack.

The sources I have listed have proven to me to be good, reliable, and professional in their business. Nothing irritates a customer like having an item on order for weeks only to be told (or not told!) that it is unavailable after all. Also, some but not all “Print on Demand” services do not actually have the music; they hope they can find it and copy it if and when someone orders it.

This project of accumulating, organizing, and presenting our AGO Founders was an exercise in examining detail and correcting the tiniest and most insidious of errors. The resources used ranged from The Story of the American Guild of Organists by Samuel Atkinson Baldwin, H W Gray, 1946, to “American Guild of Organists Centennial: The Founders of the AGO—Who Were They?” by Barbara Owen, The American Organist, February 1996. It was important to corroborate the information because there were so many tiny errors in things such as middle initials and dates of birth and death, and for this A Directory of Composers for Organ, Third Edition, by John Henderson, was invaluable. Lastly, the Google online collection of digitized volumes of periodicals proved useful in settling differences. The researchers whose efforts made this possible included John Apple, Stephen Best, and Michael Johnston. May this list of the 145 Founders be of interest to organists and may it serve to help spur interest in getting some of their existing music played for those hearing it for the first time today.
